What does a successful Mainframe System Engineer do?

A successful Mainframe System Engineer at Fiserv ensures the availability, reliability, and performance of z/OS environments that support critical client workloads. You will execute z/OS and ISV product upgrades, maintain SMP/E workflows, collaborate with application and vendor teams, and drive continual improvements to mainframe operations. Your work enables business continuity and meets contractual support obligations.

What you will do:

  • Perform z/OS OS and ISV product upgrades and maintenance using SMP/E and z/OS workflows.
  • Configure, install, and maintain mainframe system software and vendor products; execute SMP/E and non‑SMP/E installs.
  • Troubleshoot and resolve system issues across JES2, JCL, IBM utilities, USS and Parallel Sysplex environments.
  • Lead performance tuning, capacity planning, storage management and hardware migration activities.
  • Coordinate with vendors and application teams for upgrade planning, testing, and successful production cutovers.
  • Produce and approve system documentation, runbooks, test plans, and configuration notes.
  • Mentor system programming staff, run technical working sessions, and contribute to modernization efforts (Zowe/Open Mainframe).

What you will need to have:

  • 8+ years of experience in z/OS system programming and SMP/E-based installations.
  • 8+ years of experience in performing OS and ISV product upgrades and compatibility maintenance.
  • 8+ years of experience with JCL and IBM utilities (IEBGENER, IEBCOPY, AMASPZAP, DFDSS) and JES2 initialization.
  • 8+ years of experience with Unix System Services (USS) and mainframe storage/backup utilities.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or a related field, and/or equivalent military experience.

What would be great to have:

  • 8+ years of experience with Parallel Sysplex, z/VM, and sysplex configuration management.
  • 8+ years of experience with REXX/CLIST scripting and automation for mainframe operations.
  • 8+ years of experience in performance tuning, capacity planning and workload optimization on z/OS.
  • 8+ years of experience with modern mainframe toolchains (Zowe, Open Mainframe) and CI/CD integration.
  • 8+ years of experience coordinating ISV/vendor upgrades and vendor change lifecycle management.
